The Hiawatha Animal Humane Society is over 30 years old. We presently have 80 members but are always looking for more. Membership is open to anyone interested in animal welfare.
We are a non-profit organization so our membership dues and donations are tax deductible.
We are always seeking volunteers to foster animals as they wait placement. The lack of a shelter makes these volunteers invaluable. Each week we have anywhere from 2-10 animals needing new homes.
To volunteer, please Email us at help@HAHumaneSociety.org or call Jolyne at: 651-345-6362 or Jessica at 651-575-4740.
Our organization sent $2,500. to animal shelters in Mississippi and Louisiana for aid during the Katrina flooding. Also, two society members each gave a week of their time to help in the Mississippi shelter. While there, the rescued two dogs which they brought back to Minnesota for treatment and placement. One eventually went to Green Bay, Wisconsin and the other was placed locally.
Another important function of our organization is participation in Camp Companion. which is modeled after the trap-spay/neuter-return program in North Carolina, but has been modified to serve SE Minnesota cat needs.
Camp Companion believes that all cats deserve a safe and caring home. Unfortunately many cats born each year are destined to be homeless. Feral cats are the result of “throw away” cats. Instead of eradicating them, Camp Companion operates a free program to trap, neuter and vaccinate feral and stray cats and then return them to their homes in the wild. The program is directed by a staff of volunteers, including veterinarians, vet students, vet technicians and cat lovers. The tip of the left ear is cropped to indicate graduates of the program. Camp Companion also seeks homes for abandoned cats through other humane societies.
Recently the Hiawatha Animal Humane Society donated $1,000 to Camp Companion and obtained a grant from Hearth Technologies for an additional $1,000. A grant received in 2007 allowed us to provide pet food for a year at the Lake City and Wabasha Food Shelf.
