The Hiawatha Animal Humane Society is over 30 years old. We presently have 100+ members and are always looking for more. Membership is open to anyone interested in animal welfare.
We are a non-profit organization so our membership dues and donations are tax deductible.
We are always seeking volunteers to temporarily foster animals as they wait placement. The lack of a shelter makes these volunteers invaluable. Each week we have anywhere from 2-10 animals needing new homes.

In late 2007, the HAHS began providing pet food coupons, available through the local food shelves. These certificates can be redeemed at Gerkins Town & Country in either Lake City or Wabasha and Myer’s Feed & Farm Supply in Lake City, MN. for food to help feed the pets of folks who have fallen on hard times. The program has been exceptionally well received and is funded by numerous donations from other local organizations as well as funds from the HAHS. We believe that it has enabled familes to keep their animal companions with them at a time they might otherwise have had to be surrendered.
Another important function of our organization is participation in Camp Companion. which is modeled after the trap-spay/neuter-return program in North Carolina, but has been modified to serve SE Minnesota cat needs.
Camp Companion believes that all cats deserve a safe and caring home. Unfortunately many cats born each year are destined to be homeless. Feral cats are the result of “throw away” cats. Instead of eradicating them, Camp Companion operates a free program to trap, neuter and vaccinate feral and stray cats and then return them to their homes in the wild. The program is directed by a staff of volunteers, including veterinarians, vet students, vet technicians and cat lovers. The tip of the left ear is cropped to indicate graduates of the program. Camp Companion also seeks homes for abandoned cats through other humane societies.
In 2008, the Hiawatha Animal Humane Society donated $1,000 to Camp Companion and obtained a grant from Hearth Technologies for an additional $1,000. Another generous grant that same year from them also helped us establish our food shelf program.
